Istanbul’s ‘mega project’ blueprints presented

The world’s first “triple-deck sub-sea tunnel project” was presented in an event attended by the Turkish Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu attended the promotional meeting on Thursday, February 27, of the Istanbul Mega Project which will be built between the Bosphorus Bridge and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge.

The promotional meeting of the Istanbul Mega Project, which was attended by Turkish Minister of Transportation, Maritime and Communication Lütfi Elvan and the Turkish PM, gave a glimpse of the proposed project to those who participated in the Istanbul Congress Center.

In his speech, Davutoğlu said that this is the first triple-deck sub-sea tunnel Project in the World, adding that today is a historic day.

The Marmaray, Istanbul’s original sub-sea tunnel project, became operational as a rail tunnel used by the metros (or subway’s) train cars, on October 29, 2013. The second, the Eurasia Tunnel, a double-deck tunnel that will connect the European side to the Anatolian side of Istanbul under the Bosphorous strait and which crawls along over 14.6 km (9.1 miles) is presently under construction. It is due to open in 2016.

One of the most important objectives of the Project, which will be built between the First Bosphorus Bridge and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, is to relieve the city’s intense traffic.

Davutoğlu also explained: “We have been working on this Project for about 10 month. This project will attract international attention for a century. With this Project, people’s lives will change; it will be the first triple-decker tunnel in the World.”

The Turkish PM added that within 5 years the tunnel would be finish.

Davutoğlu said: This Mega project reflects the way we look at İstanbul. This project takes all aspects of the city into consideration. It combines İstanbul’s 9 railway systems. It connects the 3 big bridges in a ring shape. The 3-floor mega project will connect all of the roads. Istanbul have put up with a lot of traffic congestion.”

He added: “This is an eco-friendly Project, it will not damage the skyline of Istanbul.”
